Comfor-Pedic® Joins With Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Growing Bedding Brand and National Media Marketing

By: Dale T. Read, Editor-in-Chief

Don’t ever tell Scott Smalling, CEO and Owner or Jack Squires, President of Comfor Products, that a privately held, family-owned business cannot play in the big leagues. Specialty foam bedding company Comfor-Pedic has been supplying mattresses and pillows to the nationally broadcast Extreme Makeover: Home Edition since late September. "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is the quintessential community service and marketing marriage for Comfor-Pedic, because on camera and off these people are the real deal," stated Smalling.

Seven Episodes have been shot utilizing the Comfor-Pedic products all across the United States. "It has been a goal of mine for the last two years to join with this wonderful program," beamed Smalling, CEO. "We finally got our chance when they were looking for mattresses with an FR story since the home they were rebuilding for an Iowa family (Aired October 29th) was destroyed by fire. Even though the FR regulations are just now gaining momentum in the media, I knew our early national compliance (June ’04) to this law would prove beneficial," explained Smalling.

Smalling added, "I have been a fan of the show since its inception. However, not until I spent the day on location in Southern California during the tear down scene did I realize how wonderful this team of people really is!" continued Smalling. Ty Pennington, the raspy voice leader of the team was as committed to this project both physically and emotionally as he portrays on television. Page, Paul, Michael and Edwardo (Design Team) were all there preparing to strategically launch their next mission impossible. The design team took time out to meet and greet all of the volunteers and crowds of people who had gathered to watch another house go up, literally overnight.

Todd and Jackie Schmidt owners of Progressive Products Inc., a close partner with Comfor-Pedic, also contributed their time by delivering the mattresses and pillows to the site just before the reveal. Todd Schmidt, an industry veteran, spent time with Ty in the family’s new master bedroom training him on how to properly utilize the Nuvo Sleep System to maximize the benefit for the injured officer.

The Nuvo Sleep System (a three motor moveable base with a flexible foundation material) was selected for the officer due to her becoming paralyzed from the waist down after a tragic shooting in the line of duty. "Although I did not get a chance to meet her personally," says Smalling, "I was able to spend time with some of her friends and talk to her fellow officers with the LAPD. The common theme amongst all of the stories was that she is a dynamic, courageous and spirited person who continues to approach life, even after the accident, with an incredible passion."
