American National Mfg. Inc. a family-owned and long-time specialty bedding manufacturer which produces consumer and medical air mattresses as well as waterbeds is expanding into a larger marketing arena. The one time relatively low profile privately-held company with many years of experience and established business in the medical field and commercial bedding in Europe and the US announced that it has completed the purchase of Nautilus Sleep Systems from Nautilus, Inc., a publicly traded company based in the state of Washington. Some observers believe that despite its relatively low profile American National Manufacturing may be a technological leader in air barrier and movement technology for health and sleep products. The acquisition of Nautilus Sleep Systems certainly will bring higher visibility to this California-based company and could be a harbinger of good things to come in the area of expansion and market development for American National Manufacturing.

According to a company spokesperson, the sale closed on August 1, 2006 and the transfer of all assets was completed by November 1, 2006. The purchase included the mattress related inventory held by Nautilus, all the marketing materials including all print materials, infomercials, commercials and other media materials. The purchase also included all the patents, trademarks, sleep studies and over 25 Internet URLs that pertain to the Air Mattress product line. American National has also assumed the warranty obligations for over 80 million dollars worth of air mattresses, which Nautilus sold through its direct marketing channels.

American National’s relationship with Nautilus actually began back in 1997 when they were approached by Bowflex to design and manufacture an adjustable air mattress line, which they could sell through their direct marketing channels. Bowflex originally marketed the air mattress line under the banner of Instant Comfort. Bowflex then later purchased Nautilus and several other companies and changed the name of the mattress line to Nautilus Sleep Systems. The majority of the Nautilus Sleep systems were sold from 2001 through 2004. Nautilus made the decision to exit the mattress category to further concentrate on their core products which are fitness related products.
