SPECIAL REPORT by Dale T. Read, Editor-in-Chief |

In this new era of health-conscious consumers, litigation, government regulations and fines, as well as growing environmental awareness, it is becoming increasingly important for retailers to know what is going on inside a bed. The “Intel® Inside” marketing campaign was created by the micro-chip manufacturer because they knew that consumers wanted a quality product inside their computers. They wanted a brand, a company name they could identify with, count on, and even ask for. More and more consumers, and retailers, a like, need and want to know what is going on with any product they bring into their home, including their bed. What materials are being used for fillers, separators, fibers, quilting, foams and ticking covers? Not only do retailers need to provide inquiring consumers more information, but they need to protect themselves by having as much knowledge as possible about what goes into the various conventional and specialty sleep products they are selling. This special supplier section entitled “In the Bed” is designed to educate the retailer not only about the materials and components but also about the companies supplying those materials and components to mattress/bedding manufacturers. We hope this section is informative and useful for all who read it. |

Deslee Textiles Focuses on Specialty and Mid-to-Upper End Mattress Market with Eco-friendly, FR and Green/Natural Mattress Fabric Line-Up Knits Emerge as a Key Solution
Bart Dehaerne , President of Deslee Textiles USA, (managing director for North America) notes that these showings while highly relevant, targeted and appropriate for the US market today, are merely a sampling of the total offering of special branded products by the Deslee Clama Group. Deslee, as a whole, offers bamboo, cashmere, linen, pure silk, soya, wool and hemp within their “inspired by nature” collection. Depending upon the part of the world where a Deslee factory is located with weather/temperature/ humidity and disease considerations, the company has engineered mattress fabrics that address sleeping temperature, athletic cooling comfort, invisible molecular barrier and coatings, bacterial, fungal and dust mite resistant fabrics, as well as dirt and stain resistant fabrics, recycled natural fibers and waterproofing. Deslee Clama also offers fragrance fabrics, including such popular and pleasant aromatherapy products as chamomile, lavender and vanilla. Dehaerne states that the US-based facility operating out of a 70,000 square foot factory in South Carolina is directing its innovation and manufacturing to where the US market is moving. “We are focusing on offering new technologies and designs to the specialty sleep market, and to the mid-to-upper end premium, ultra-premium and even “luxury” categories. We have a focused strategy of reaching out to manufacturers and retailers of specialty products and mid-to-upper end products that need knitted mattress fabric solutions. Here in the US we have shifted away from woven mattress fabrics to state-of-the art knitted fabrics which offer the stretch, flexibility, breath-ability, touch, feel and performance needed by today’s evolving specialty sleep products,” says Dehaerne. Dehaerne quickly notes that Deslee, through its international manufacturing capabilities, still offers woven products for accessories and matching side panels. “We still offer our line of woven fabrics for accessories and borders, but our primary focus is developing and producing knitted fabrics that meet the needs of the evolving specialty and upper end market. It is important, however, for a customer to know that we can offer them a mattress fabric solution that meets their needs. We manufacture throughout the world with plants in Belgium, Romania, Brazil, Indonesia and here in the US.” Each of these factories addresses unique issues to the market, product innovation and technology that can be used worldwide if necessary. As an example, the factory in Indonesia is every bit as cost competitive as China whilst offering the Deslee quality guarantee. Dehaerne also notes that their state-of-the art US-based knit factory is providing “just-in-time” delivery programs to manufacturers, as well as computerized quality and inventory control and traceability for regulatory purposes. “Our Deslee company motto is ‘Driven by perfection’. We know this is a moving target, and take both our product development and the services we offer mattress/bedding customers very seriously,” says Dehaerne. Dehaerne invites mattress bedding manufacturers to visit the Deslee show space at the ISPA EXPO, No. 917, March 12–15th in Baltimore, MD. Mattress manufacturers and retailers who want more information about Deslee mattress fabrics should call Eric Delaby at Deslee Textiles USA: at (864) 472-2276 or e-mail eric.delaby@desleetextiles.com |
